Club night
With:
Paul St. Hilaire & Rhauder (live)
Steph (Deep Medi)
Opium Hum (boilerroom / Hyper Real Radio)
Gigsta (Cashmere Radio)
Over the course of four nights, the 10th Berlin Biennale’s public program I’m Not Who You Think I’m Not and ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics present the Dance To My Dream sessions in ZK/U’s basement. Their starting point is artist Tony Cokes' interest in versions and remixing as expressed in his video works, which are on view in ZK/U’s basement during the day within the 10th Berlin Biennale.
The first Dance To My Dream session is devoted to the continuous search for deep basslines and dubs that echo Berlin’s techno history. Paul St. Hilaire (a.k.a Tikiman), a Dominican-born singer and artist appears alongside fellow dub pioneer Rhauder with their new project. St. Hilaire’s mission in search for a better groove goes back to the very beginnings of Berlin's dub techno universe with legendary labels Basic Channel and Chain Reaction from the early ‘90s—a heritage that still continues to influence contemporary club music to this day. In comparison to the old school, darker Basic Channel excursions in reverb, depth, and distortion, their new project explores the realm of hard kick drums and dubbed-out, minimalistic soundscapes.
STEPH is the name behind one of the UK’s most influential dubstep labels, DEEP MEDI MUSIC, which for well over a decade has been home to some of the most sought-after, genre-defining artists like MALA or SKREAM. We are proud to have her on board for a rare all-vinyl session that goes well beyond a typical DJ set. Her weapons of choice range from dusty roots reggae 7”s to contemporary UK bass music and a breadth of Caribbean dance tunes that span the past four decades. She is a true, original selector, eager to represent the original art form of two turntables and a mixer¬––sound system culture at its finest.
OPIUM HUM a.k.a. Michail Stangl is the head honcho of BOILER ROOM, the ever-growing force of nature bringing electronic dance music in all its variety to the world. All of his work—be it as a curator, activist, or DJ—revolves around a strongly felt dedication to represent usually marginalized cultures and subcultures from all over the globe, boiling it all down to a fierce, uncompromising and bass-heavy sonic experience that knows little to no restrictions and boundaries.
GIGSTA hails from the UK and is part of a whole new wave of up-and-coming DJs in Berlin’s buzzing nightlife—a next generation of outernational young artists eager to showcase their craft of bending genres and styles like it’s nothing. She has just received her knighting as a DJ with a booking at FREEROTATION, probably the world’s most exclusive and elusive festival out there, and we couldn’t be happier to have her. If there is one DJ to watch out for, it’s her. Welcome!
